Kenya- Korea Maritime collaboration

Principal Secretary Geoffrey Kaituko met with Korean vice Minister, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries  Mr. Song, Myeong- dal to discuss ways of strengthening the maritime sector. 

3 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU's) between the two countries are on their final stage before signing. 

The MOUs are to further strengthen the collaboration in sustainable exploitation of maritime and fisheries resources and opportunities.

In addition , deliberations were made on expanding maritime education and training, mutual recognition of Certificates of Competency, strengthening of maritime security, combating Illegal Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Fishing and addressing the scourge of piracy attacks within the respective Coastal States. 

Korea agreed to enhance technical support to Kenya as well as further strengthen Kenya- Korea cooperation by offering training for maritime officers in the Korean institutions.

The visit forms part of a series of preparatory meeting for the upcoming Republic of Korea and Africa Summit to be held in June, 2024 where the President of Kenya, H.E Dr. William Ruto is expected to attend in person.
